First published in 1850, Olive is a variant on the story of Jane Eyre. The titular character is not an orphan, but she suffers from a physical deformity that acts as a similar social impediment. Olive grows up sheltered, thinking nothing is wrong with her. However when her overprotective nursemaid dies, it is a great shock to her to know that she is not attractive to men and will therefore probably never marry. Even though Olive is determined to support herself and be happy in spite of her hardships, she eventually does find love in a very unlikely person. This edition includes black and white illustrations by G. Bowers.
OLIVE Illustrated edition by DINAH MARIA CRAIK Literature Fiction eBooks
A very long novel written with strong religious beliefs and convictions, along with that, an extremely rigid moral code adhered to by all the good and "righteous" citizens of that era, so ingrained into the main character's up bringing and personalities as to affect and rule their entire lives. Towards the very last part of the book it got very much full of religious thoughts and actions but! It was never boring, which is a true rarity in this readers lifelong and extensive reading experience, this was the only book I could find by this long since deceased author, and if she only wrote this one fascinating one, then this is such a masterpiece that it was quite enough for a life's work.Product details

OLIVE Illustrated edition by DINAH MARIA CRAIK Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
This book had a lot of really meaningful moments. It was slow in some places but that also gave it a sense of calm and peace.
Another wonderful love story from this author. All of her books are heartfelt and deep and musical to read. Full of passion and deep love that has been lost over the past 2 generations. May more readers discover this treasure!
Oh, this story is written in English. (Although there is some Scotch dialect that can cause some head-scratching.) The "dead" language is the language of love and faith that is incomprehensible to people in this post modern world.
The story is maudlin in parts and does tend to drag on, but the narrative serves to carry the message that people are often presented with the need to persevere through repeated and extended losses and hardships in their lives. The ability to persevere is derived from the belief in a loving God who supports those who turn to him and who works for the good through all human experiences. It is God's love that flows through men and women, enabling them to in turn love one another.
The "roles" of men and women the story models are ones which today's progressive society rejects, and perhaps rightly so, although it's hard to imagine a more miserable set of human beings than those men and women who are striving to conform to the "roles" of today's progressive society.
I give this book five stars for its ability (like great science fiction) to take the reader into a society that seems as if it existed not just in another time, but on another planet.
