I've been a Burroughs fan for years, and I've recently started using his essays and books in the classroom. These essays, like much of his work, are accessible, funny, and insightful. As an aspiring memoirist and teacher of writing, they provide compelling examples and templates for exploring one's own experiences in the essay form.
I needed this today! Seriously funny. Made me laugh and smile! Brilliant. Whenever I need a reality check, I can re-read this one little book.
Great book. Not necessarily the stories I would have selected for repeat (except the one at the yacht building job - ha!!!) but still a good taste of Burroughs' work. I have given his books as gifts, and I would opt to give one of the lengthier books to this one only because of the limited story choices.
I am a Burroughs fan to begin with. Of course I loved these essays. His writing is captivating and humorous as usual.
I'm a big fan of Augusten's books, however this is not one of his best books. I'm sorry to say this but it feels "rushed". I'm looking forward to his upcoming book and his other ones are defiantly worth reading. This one, you can probably skip unless you want to read everything he writes (like I do).
If this is the first book of his you might read, move this to later and read one of the others first.
I've made it a point to read all of Augusten Buttoughs' books and downloaded this one hoping for something new. While it did include one of my all time favorite essays ~Debby the housekeeper I was hoping for something unseen before or unrecognizable from the context that these stories have been seen in before.... and the plus one seemed more like an afterthought....
Augusten Burroughs is a genius. I love to read his work over again and I always laugh harder the second time. His take on the world around him is hilarious and he writes it all down perfectly. This is a perfect gift for someone you love.
